Vizualization Team Assignment: Mike Brown Shooting

For this particular assignment, I decided to use two cartoons as opposed to a picture and a cartoon in order to better display the stark contrast between the multitude of issues associated with this story. The Mike Brown shooting was such a polarizing case that it meant different things to different people depending on their beliefs or viewpoints on what happened that day. In the instance of these cartoons, both artists took different approaches to the central issue at hand. The first photo depicts the issue as one centered upon race and how the white man is able to defend himself because he is the one who survived (or in some viewpoints murdered) the black man. On the other hand, the second photo stakes the claim that police brutality is the most pressing issue and not that of race. Especially since the man experiencing the brutality is white and not black it really brings the focus of the issue back to brutality in the second photo. All in all, both cartoons are describing the problems of one singular event that they viewed in different ways which made the entire Mike Brown story such a hot-button issue at the time and for the foreseeable future.
